Local athletes from the London Lightning together with media personalities and others will help kick off the 2012 Scan Away Hunger campaign, an annual fundraising initiative by Mission Services of London.

Players from the London Lightning basketball team, morning show personalities Chris Love and Natalie Lovie from Fresh FM and Dunner and Matt from More FM join members of the London Police Service and the London Professional Firefighters Association on Thursday (Nov. 1) at 9:30 am at the North London Sobey’s.

Teams of four will race around the store choosing ingredients to create nutritious meals for 10 people with a budget of $31.10. The average cost to provide a meal in a Canadian shelter is $3.11.

“This is a key fundraiser for us every year,” said Peter Rozeluk, executive director of Mission Services of London. “In the previous 17 years, (London residents) have donated more than $700,000 during this campaign, money we use to feed those individuals who use our shelters. This campaign is also a great way to promote community awareness about our services.”

The campaign runs throughout November and December at North London Sobey’s, Giant Tiger (London locations) Valu-Mart (London locations), Sunripe Marketplace and Angelo’s.  Shoppers can donate $3.11 to their grocery bill and provide a meal for someone who really needs it.
