London’s annual Torch Run Polar Plunge took over the icy waters once again, bringing together participants who braved the cold to support a heartwarming cause. The event, which took place on Friday, February 28th, at the Powerhouse Brewery at 100 Kellogg Lane saw local emergency service members, public figures, and community supporters all diving into freezing waters to raise funds for Special Olympics Ontario.
The water was incredibly cold, described by one participant as “much colder” than their previous plunge into the French River.
“ I’ve had family and friends participate in the Special Olympics, and that was why I came today to support this great event.”

2025 Polar Plunge
London Fire Department personnel participated in the polar plunge to support Special Olympics.
The Polar Plunge serves as a major fundraiser for Special Olympics Ontario, with all proceeds going towards supporting over 23,000 athletes across the province. This year, the event raised over $54,000. The plunge was organized by the London Torch Run Polar Plunge Committee, which includes members of the London OPP, RCMP, and the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.
Despite the bone-chilling temperatures, spirits were high, with participants donning creative and fun costumes in a show of enthusiasm for the event. Registration for the event began at 4 p.m., and participants could feel the excitement building as the event got closer.
Many of the plunge participants have personal connections to the cause, with one participant sharing, “I do the plunge because it brings awareness to an amazing cause. We have a son with special needs, so it makes sense.”
From start to finish, the Polar Plunge was a success, uniting the London community in a freezing but heartwarming event. The support shown by donors and volunteers will help fuel important programs for athletes who rely on the Special Olympics for support and opportunities to shine.
