Almost one year ago, these are the words we heard expressed in the media:
Two workers were killed and four others were injured when part of a four-storey, luxury apartment building under construction in London, Ontario, Canada collapsed on Friday, 11 December. The collapse occurred at Nest on Wonderland at approximately 11.40am at 555 Teeple Terrace, off Wonderland Road. Rescue teams took five workers to hospital, where one died. Another man, found to be deceased, remained trapped in the debris until Saturday because the structure was deemed unstable
Steve Holmes, Chairperson of the Health and Safety Committee states; “Since the collapse no results of the workplace investigation have been released to let workers know what went wrong or what to watch out for in their workplaces, they need to know to stay safe.” Kevin Jones (a recognized worker advocate) will be at the site on Saturday (the 1-year anniversary) from 11:00am to 12:00pm and would appreciate others joining him to remind everyone of the precariousness of workplaces without oversight. One year later, we know the residents were not able to return to their residences until February of this year and were faced with the memories and impacts on families that were felt from this collapse.
We have learned that only days from its first anniversary, eight workplace safety charges have been laid in the partial collapse of a London apartment building that killed two construction workers and injured five others. From the London Free Press:
