Firefighters from London and St. Thomas will be in Boston this week to pay respects to two firefighters, killed in a lpfamassive blaze.

Local Boston media reports roughly 10,000 are expected to honour the fallen firefighters on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“There’s four representing the London Professional Firefighters Association,” says John Hassan, President of the London Professional Fire Fighters Association.

“We’re mixed in with the Toronto Local, they’ve organized a bus. We’re picking up some other firefighters east of Toronto and heading down. I believe there’s a contingent from St. Thomas, they’re driving down. And there’s firefighters from all across Canada, the United States, and I’m sure, from the world, that’ll be making their way to Boston… to honour these two brave chaps killed in the line of duty.”

Hassan adds that tragedies like these are part of the unpredictable work of first responders and can happen anytime, anywhere, and anyplace.

“That is our reality on a daily basis, we never know what’s going to happen next. Any first responder that heads out on a call. That unpredictable nature of what we do is certainly always in the back of our minds but we push that to the back because we know someone’s in trouble and our job is to make the worst of their lives survivable, better, to turn it around for them.”

The blaze raced through a townhouse last Wednesday in the Back Bay area of Boston, trapping and killing two firefighters in the basement and injuring thirteen others.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
