Brief History or Facts
London’s first fire hall was built in 1847 and was located on Little North Street (later renamed Carling Street). Previously the firefighting equipment was stored in rented premises. This fire hall was used until 1874 when it was turned over to the police department for use as police headquarters. The fire hall was equipped with a 700 pound bell purchased by the town. The ringing of the bell replaced a trumpet that was used to summon firefighters to duty. The bell remained in the Little North Street station until 1854 when it was moved to city hall. Land for another fire hall was bought on King Street, west of Clarence Street, in 1852. In the following year, the No.1 Fire Station was built.
