fire (2)$400,000 Fire on Morgan Crescent Caused by Overloaded Extension Cords

The London Fire Department is reminding residents to be cautious with what and how much they plug in to extension cords after a fire in the southwest end of the city.

Fire crews were called to Morgan Cresc. at 11:45 p.m. Friday night after a family returned home to find it filled with smoke.

When firefighters arrived, they found that the blaze started in the basement and grew to the main and second floors of the home.

“We have major structural damage to the floor joists on the first floor, and then the fire chased up into the walls. So we’ve got structural damage in the walls, smoke damage occurred throughout the home due to the massive amount of fire that occurred in the basement,” said Platoon Chief Kirk Loveland.

Officials pegged the damage at $400-thousand dollars.

Neither the homeowners nor firefighters sustained any injuries in the blaze.

“The main safety message here is not to overload circuits with extensions cords and heating appliances. The cause was an extension cord to a space heater, which overheated the wire and created a short circuit in the system,” said Loveland.
