Damage was estimated at more than $1 million after fire gutted a north-end home, officials with the London Fire Department said on Sunday.
Fire crews were called to the home on Carnforth Road at about 5 p.m. on Saturday to find the empty house ablaze, platoon Chief Gary Mosburger said.
“The residents left about an hour before, they were very lucky. They came home to find their home was pretty destroyed,” Mosburger said. “We’re looking at $1 million-plus in damages. It’s a write-off. It was a well-built home.”
Carnforth is a residential street in a subdivision that’s located southwest of the intersection of Fanshawe Park Road and Richmond Street in north London.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined but it started in the living room, Mosburger added. It is not considered suspicious. The investigation was continuing as of Sunday.
The fire department had four engines, an aerial truck and a heavy rescue truck at the scene, Mosburger said. “We carried out an offensive fire attack to make sure no one was inside.”
