London fire crews had their hands full with a stubborn garage fire Thursday morning on Whisperwood Avenue.

The initial call came in shortly after 9 a.m. with at least five fire engines responding to the two-storey home at 174 Whisperwood Avenue, right across the street from Byron Somerset Public School.

When fire fighters arrived at the scene, flames had already engulfed the home’s garage, District Fire Chief Andy Britton told reporters at the scene.

Britton said the fire began when the homeowner’s son started his car in the garage to let it warm up. That’s when the flames ignited under the vehicle, likely in the engine compartment.

“A lot of the fuel from the vehicle also fuelled the fire, it leaked as well. It was hard for the crews to actually initially put it out,” Britton said.

The metal double garage doors were in a warped heap on the home’s front lawn while other items damaged by the fire were placed off to the side.

The garage itself is completely charred, but fire crews believe the damage was primarily contained to that area. Minor smoke damage was reported inside the home, but crews had already set about ventilating the property.

No injuries were reported, but Britton said they’re still looking for a cat and dog inside the home. He expected they’d be fine considering the damage inside wasn’t extensive.

A damage estimate hasn’t been released yet.
