Firefighters responded to the single storey, two-unit home on Simcoe Street – between Waterloo and Colborne – around 4:30 a.m. following reports of a kitchen fire.

“There was a fair amount of fire in the cupboard area. The first arriving crew did a good job in knocking it down, almost right away. After that, it was just cleaning up, and salvaging

[what was left].” said acting Platoon Chief Lewis Carter.

The blaze was contained to the kitchen area.

Damage is estimated at $50,000.

Injuries to the one occupant who was taken to hospital are not believed to be serious, although no further details have been made available.

The investigation into the cause of Friday’s fire is still in its early stages.
