A research technician suffered minor cuts and burns following a lab explosion in Western’s Robarts Research Institute.

Fire crews responded to the scene Tuesday afternoon and said damage was contained to just the one lab.

“We had a minor explosion of a chemical called Rubidium and it injured one of the University workers,” said Platoon Chief Mike Black.

The researcher was treated by EMS at the scene and then taken to hospital.

The building was evacuated for precautionary reasons and no other injuries were reported.

Emergency crews remain on scene.

There’s no damage estimate at this time.
