Firefighters have extinguished a blaze on Hwy 401 that closed the crucial artery in both directions about 9 a.m. Tuesday.

A tractor trailer caught fire in the Highbury Ave. area of the highway and lanes had to be shut down in both directions because of heavy smoke, said John Scott, district fire chief with the London Fire Department.

“The tires of the trailer caught fire, flew off the rim and hit the median,”

Scott added.

Police said there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

At 9:30 a.m. traffic was starting to move in both directions.
