The London Fire Department (LFD) has secured 600 combination smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms through the Safe Community Project Zero initiative. This resource acquisition, made possible by a partnership with Enbridge Gas Inc. and the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council (FMPFSC), was announced during Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week.

The Safe Community Project Zero campaign is a province-wide public education effort that will provide more than 14,220 alarms to residents in 75 communities across Ontario. These alarms are designed to deliver early warning to safely escape both house fires and carbon monoxide exposure.

Jon Pegg, Ontario Fire Marshal and Chair of the FMPFSC, stressed the role of the initiative in upholding legal obligations: “It is a program that not only helps fire departments raise awareness about the legal requirement to have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms installed in all Ontario homes, but also reinforces the critical role they play in saving lives.”

The LFD plans to integrate the alarms into its existing Sound the Alarm smoke alarm program.

Deputy Fire Chief Matt Hepditch expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided to the LFD to distribute the alarms within their community.
