Firefighters had to “extricate” a woman from the wreckage after a spectacular two-vehicle crash outside a London elementary school on Monday morning, officials say.

London police say the crash happened at about 7 a.m. at the intersection of Oxford Street East and McNay Street. A woman who was driving a vehicle along Oxford Street suffered “serious” injuries and was taken to hospital, police said.

Stunning video from a nearby security camera, obtained by The London Free Press, shows the collision happened just as the sun was rising on Monday. It shows a vehicle heading east along Oxford Street going through the intersection – when a southbound vehicle drives into the intersection at a high rate of speed.

The vehicles collided outside Blessed Sacrament Catholic elementary school.

McNay runs north off Oxford Street but doesn’t continue further south. The second vehicle that entered the intersection heading south along McNay appeared to be going full speed, even though McNay stops at that T-intersection with Oxford Street.

The video appears to show a green light for east-west traffic on Oxford Street, and a red light for traffic on McNay Street, at the time of the crash.

Photos from the scene show two vehicles tangled up after the collision, having crashed into a chain-link fence at the edge of the school property. One of them, a pickup truck, suffered severe front-end damage. The other vehicle was damaged on its driver’s side.

Fire officials said they “extricated” one person from a vehicle. Police said the injured woman remained in hospital as of Monday afternoon.

“I’m just glad the kids at the school weren’t out playing, because that’s usually where they are, just behind the fence (where the vehicles collided),” said Mustafa Al-Kaissy of Sport Motors, a dealership whose cameras captured footage of the crash.

Police said a man was arrested at the scene and the investigation was ongoing as of Monday afternoon. There was no indication yet of any criminal charges.
