A tenant in an east London apartment unit without working smoke alarms was rescued from a balcony by London firefighters during a blaze early Monday, the London fire department said.
There weren’t any working smoke alarms in the unit in the building on Mornington Avenue where the fire started, the fire department said. The tenant was rescued from their balcony, treated at the scene and then taken to hospital. No information about the extent of the person’s injuries was released.
“It is so important to have working smoke alarms. They are lifesavers,” platoon chief Kirk Loveland said in a social media post.
Damage is estimated at $25,000, the fire department said.
