Fire investigators still looking for the cause of the early morning blaze

Damage is estimated at $2-million following an early morning fire at 172 Roberts Avenue, just south of the Western Fair District.

The fire broke out at around 5 a.m. and crews were still on the scene five and a half hours later extinguishing lingering hotspots.

No injuries have been reported.

Investigators from the London Fire Department and London police are looking for the cause of the fire, which gutted the main structure and lit up the early morning sky.

“The building was fully involved upon our arrival,” said Platoon Chief Gary Mosburger.

“So we took a defensive strategy, fighting the fire from the exterior and utilizing our aerial apparatus earlier in this situation because of the extent of the fire damage and the building’s structural stability.”

Two buildings on either side of the main structure also caught fire, but damage to one of them was limited, Mosburger said.

Investigators haven’t determined whether the fire was suspicious, he said.
