A roofing crew scrambled to safety when a fire that caused an estimated $500,000 in damage erupted at a south-end commercial strip mall complex Wednesday morning, the London fire department says.
Fire crews raced to 203 Exeter Rd., between White Oak and Wonderland roads, at about 11:15 a.m. after several 911 calls about a structure fire.
Platoon chief Gary Mosburger said the fire spread to more than one unit, but firefighters contained the blaze and put it out quickly.
“We did notify our fire investigators to attend and they are going to be working on the origin, causes and circumstances of this fire,” he said.
Several roofers were working when the fire began, Mosburger said. “(They) had to quickly get themselves off the roof . . . to safety.”
All the roofers were accounted for by the time firefighters arrived and no injuries were reported, Mosburger said.
Damage is estimated at $500,000, the fire department said.
