In the early to mid-1800s, Londoners were required to keep buckets like this filled with water on their porches so they could help fight the fires that plagued the town. In the early days of London, fire was a constant threat in the community since most structures were made of wood. The worst conflagration was London’s Great Fire, which occurred on April 13, 1845 and flames consumed one fifth of the town. So glad we’ve got the London Fire Department.
