Police and fire officials are investigating a suspicious fire in the city’s northeast end that destroyed a barn and sent plumes of smoke into the air.

London firefighters were called out to the scene near Sunningdale Road and North Wenige Drive at about 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, acting deputy fire chief Jack Burt said.

Fire crews extinguished the flames, which badly damaged the barn.

London police, the fire department and the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal are investigating the suspicious blaze.

An investigator from the provincial agency will be attending, Burt said.

“There was no hydro to the property,” Burt said. “There are some other factors. That’s why it is being investigated as suspicious.”

The provincial agency probes all fatal fires and ones that cause serious injuries. The fire marshal is also called in to investigate arsons or suspicious fires, explosions, drug-related blazes, ones at vulnerable residences or ones that cause more than $500,000 damage.

Anyone with information is asked to call London police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
