108 Year Old Fire Hall Up For Heritage Designation
A popular fire hall in Old North with over 100 years of history will be up for heritage designation Monday at London City Hall.
The planning committee meets Monday afternoon where they will review a recommendation to give heritage designation to Fire Hall No.4 at 807 Colborne Street.
London’s s first city architect, Arthur Nutter built the hall in 1909. It is the oldest active fire station in the city and has since been modernized from horse-drawn firefighting to modern heavy fire trucks.
It was included on the Inventory of Heritage Resources in 1991 as a priority one resource.
The building was purpose-built to serve the expanding residential area in the north end of London.
A report by Tara Jenkins, a member of the London Advisory Committee on Heritage, found the fire hall to be a “good and representative example of early 20th century fire hall design.”
Jenkins also described the fire hall as a city landmark.
Since 2001, it has been part of Doors Open London and has seen over 12,500 visitors.
The planning committee meeting starts at 4 p.m.
