Driver hospitalized after Mustang flips, hits pole in Lambeth
Crews had to cut a man from a car after a single-vehicle rollover in west London Monday afternoon.
London police, fire and EMS responded to a 911 call around noon from a witness who reported a car had driven off the road and rolled into a hydro pole on Longwoods Road, west of Talbot Road.
“The driver just went off the road, he didn’t decelerate or try to get back on the road,” said Paul Marych, 51, who witnessed the accident. “He hit the driveway (of the 7334 Longwoods Road residence), went airborne then flipped a few times before he hit the pole.”
The car was heading westbound out of Lambeth when it began driving onto the shoulder of the road.
Marych stopped driving immediately and called the emergency crews to the scene, while another witness went to assist the man in the black Mustang who was unconscious immediately after the crash.
When the man regained consciousness, he began having seizures, said Marych.
Police were the first on the scene, followed by the fire department, who teamed up to remove the man from the car by removing its passenger door.
London Fire Cpt. John Sawkins said when the crews arrived the man — who he estimated was in his 20s or 30s — had regained a “low-degree of consciousness” and was able to speak and tell them him his name.
No name was given to the Free Press.
At the scene of the accident, the black Mustang the man was driving was upright on four wheels in the ditch in front of a Lambeth home. The vehicle was heavily damaged, the windshield was smashed and pieces of the front bumper were strewn across the property.
Sawkins said the damage made the car a write-off.
The lone occupant of the vehicle was taken to the hospital by Middlesex London ambulance; his condition is unknown.
It is possible a seizure caused the accident, but it is not known at this time, said Sawkins.
Witnesses of the accident have no explanation for the crash either.
“I have no idea what happened, there was no corrective steering as he started going off the road,” said Marych. “I don’t know how this happened.”
