A London man suffered burns to his face, arm and hand after he tried to take a pot of burning cooking oil to his apartment balcony.

London firefighters were called to 700 Wonderland Rd. N. about 3:30 p.m. after the fire broke out in the kitchen, damaging the range hood and the cupboard. The man who lives there tried to remove the pot, but when he did, the air moving over the heated oil ignited it, causing it to flare up and burn his face. The oil spilled on his right arm and hand, causing second-degree burns. It also spilled on the carpet and drapes, setting them ablaze.

The fire department said people need to be reminded that if oil catches fire, the best remedy is to place a lid on the pot if it’s safe, then slide the pot off the hot element onto a cool element. Do not try to douse it with water.
