One woman was transported to hospital on Monday after fire broke out in a basement apartment in east London.

Fire crews responded to 383 Ashland Avenue, a two-storey home in the area of Dundas and Highbury at around 4:26 a.m.

“When we arrived, there was heavy smoke coming from the bravo side of the structure basement stairwell,” said Platoon Chief Doug Shannon.

Firefighters were met with fire in the kitchen area of the basement unit, which was quickly extinguished.

“It was a kitchen in the basement that a woman was doing some cooking, and went back to sleep,” said Shannon.

“The woman was transported to the hospital. She’s at the hospital right now, under observation. There was no burns, it was smoke inhalation.”

Total damage is pegged at $30,000.

An investigator is expected to attend the scene Monday to determine the cause.
