Fire officials are stressing the importance of having a home escape plan, following an apartment fire in east London.

Emergency crews were called to a three-storey walk up on Oakville Ave, near Huron and Clarke Road, at around 11p.m. Monday night.

A unit on the first floor was destroyed, but the family living inside made it out safety. There were no injuries.

“There was a family of six inside the building at the time, and all escaped due to their practicing of their home escape plan,” said Fire Prevention Inspector Jack Burt. “Everyone got out safely.”

The family included a mother and five children aged 10 and under.

“You know what, this home escape plan worked perfected,” said Bert. “Once they were alerted to the fire, they got out. It highlights the importance of having a good home escape plan where you can everybody out in a timely fashion. Early detection is also the key. Working smoke alarms save lives.”

The fire department is working to determine whether the apartment unit was equipped with working smoke alarms.

Damage is pegged at around $100,000.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation as of Tuesday morning.
