An elderly man was transported to hospital with second degree burns following a house fire Sunday on Springbank Drive, west of Wharncliffe.
Fire crews responded to a home around 1 p.m. Upon arrival, smoke was seen coming from the house.
“An elderly man came out of the home, he had just started to exit the home,” said District Chief Dave Walmsley.
“We got him away from the area and then EMS arrived shortly thereafter.”
Firefighters entered the home and the fire was quickly extinguished.
Walmsley says the man suffered second degree burns to his feet and lower legs and was transported to hospital.
While the cause is still under investigation, Walmsley says smoking is believed to be a factor.
“We’re looking at it, we believe it was careless smoking, we’re not 100 per cent sure, but that’s our early indication.”
The fire orginated in the living area of the home, near the occupant’s bedroom.
“Our big concern was that this was believed to be a hoarding home,” said Walmsley.
“There was just a lot of debris and clutter in the home, so it was just confined to some of that area. It had not gotten into the structure or anything, so it was very low damage.”
The fire remains under investigation.
