London firefighters were kept busy Friday afternoon responding to a blaze on Hamilton Road in the city’s east end.
Fire officials say they were called to the scene at 785 Hamilton Road around 3:28 p.m. Friday to reports of a truck fire inside a garage.
At the scene, police officers located a male of unknown age. He was taken by EMS to hospital with minor burns to his hand and ear.
Fire officials say he was in the garage working on a leak in the gas tank of a pick-up truck when the blaze started.
When fire crews arrived they were met with heavy smoke and fire at the rear of the building.
“There was extensive smoke damage inside the building, but it was contained inside the garage,” said Fire Platoon Chief Jim Holmes. “The garage itself was attached to another business at the front that had heavy smoke damage, but there was considerable fire damage to the garage and the rear of that building.”
A cost estimate has been pegged at $70,000, and the truck inside the garage was destroyed.
The cause of the fire is not known, and Holmes says it’s too early to tell whether something mechanical contributed to the blaze.
“We know there was an individual working on a pick-up truck, but we don’t exactly know the full cause yet.”
Holmes says a fire inspector attended the scene Friday evening, and will determine whether the Ontario Fire Marshal should be contacted.
