Extensive Damage Following Huron Street Townhouse Blaze

Damage is pegged at $100,000 following a townhouse fire on Huron Street in London.

Crews were called to 1159 Huron Street late Saturday morning, and found the main floor of the unit engulfed. Crews managed to douse the blaze just before 12 p.m.

Investigators believe the fire started in a couch, and that it may have been smouldering for some time.

Jim Corrigan lives next to the unit and tells AM980 he did not hear any smoke detectors.

“By the amount of damage I have seen in the back, it’s extensive. It was probably smouldering for a while. We only got notified at 11 o’clock this morning. I didn’t hear any of the smoke detectors, or anything like that. I didn’t smell anything either until I went outside.”

Corrigan believes the house may have to be torn down and rebuilt.

“We walked around the back and looked through the back window. One of the back windows is actually warped from the heat and it looks like the window and the back door are completely gone. The back room in there, the living room, is probably going to have to be gutted and rebuilt.”

A fire official says the unit vacant at the time. Another neighbour says the residents of the unit moved out a week ago. No injuries have been reported.

Police have taped off the area at the scene, and the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
