An early morning house fire in northwest London is under investigation.

It broke out inside the garage area of a home that was set to be finished next week on Riverbend Road, northeast of Westdel Bourne and Oxford, at around 5 a.m. Tuesday.

London Fire District Chief Dave Walmsley tells AM980 they were able to quickly extinguish the blaze.

“We got a quick knock down of the fire and we were able to just contain it into the garage area. There was no extension into the home, though, there was smoke throughout the home that cleared out with our positive pressure fans.”

How the fire started is still under investigation, but Walmsley says it originated in a garbage container.

“There was some building debris in there, cardboard boxes and some small pieces of wood that were in a portable garbage containers, so that is where the fire originated.”

There was no fire damage to the inside the home, however, construction crews still have some work ahead of them.

“I would assume that the inside will have to be gutted and re-done, and the garage doors will have to be replaced. The outside exterior brick work is heavily smoke damaged, so it will need to be cleaned.” he said.

An early estimate puts damage at up to $20,000.

No injuries have been reported, and the cause remains under investigation.
