Fire crews had a busy morning Sunday, battling two early morning fires that broke out in the city’s east end.
Emergency crews were first dispatched to 378 Calgary Street just after 3 a.m. When they arrived, they found the main floor of the building engulfed in flames. Fire crews managed to douse the blaze.
The house, which has a ‘For Sale’ sign pinned to a fence at the front of the property, and has been listed since December 2013, was vacant at the time. Police said there were no injuries, and damage has been estimated at $100,000.
Police and Fire officials say they are investigating the blaze as potentially suspicious.
A few hours later, emergency crews were alerted to another blaze at a townhouse complex on Huron Street just after 5:30 a.m.
Fire officials say both floors of the townhouse were engulfed.
At the time of the fire, three people were inside the unit at 1443 Huron Street. Two people managed to make it out of the building, but one person, a male in his 20′s, had to be pulled from the fire on the building’s second floor by fire crews.
He was taken to University Hospital and is currently in critical condition.
The building saw significant fire damage to the interior and exterior, with a cost of up to $100,000 being estimated.
Police will be investigating the second blaze as well. There is no word whether it is being viewed as suspicious.
The Ontario Fire Marshal will be attending both scenes to investigate.
