London Police are investigating after an oil barrel fire on Highbury Ave just south of Oxford.
The blaze was reported Thursday afternoon shortly before 6p.m. by residents in an apartment building on Mornington Ave.
Several people living there had reported hearing a blast behind a storage building.
When fire crews arrived on scene, they found an oil barrel was lit on fire and blew up, which in turn started a small grass fire.
Platoon Chief Tom Wells tells AM980 firefighters worked quickly to avoid the flames from spreading.
“It was right next to a building,” said Wells. “There was a significant amount of leftover oil in these containers, right next to where the fire was.”
No significant damage was reported.
“The management group from the property show up, and explain what was going on in the buildings, and they’re going to remove all of the oil ASAP,” said Wells.
At this point, it’s believed the fire was deliberately set, though no suspects have been arrested.
