A pedestrian was struck by a freight train at a CN rail crossing near downtown London Saturday night.
A man was struck by an eastbound train on the south side of the crossing on Colborne St. south of York St. around 6:45 p.m., said police.
He was taken to hospital with unknown injuries.
The crossing is equipped with a gate, flashing lights and a bell, said CN spokesperson Lindsay Fedchyshyn.
“It’s got full crossing protection and indications are that it was functioning as designed,” Fedchyshyn said.
CN police and London police investigating.
It was the same crossing where William Seely, 24, of London was killed last July. He was riding on a bike with a woman on the back when they were struck by a CN train. Witnesses said a train travelling west had just finished crossing at York and Colborne streets when the two began to cross the tracks on a bicycle and were struck by a train travelling east.
Shortly after Seely’s death, a white “ghost bike” – a memorial to cyclists killed – appeared chained to a tree south of the tracks.
