Fire crews were quick to extinguish a kitchen fire at a new downtown highrise apartment building Friday afternoon.

The London Fire Department were called to an apartment  unit on the 21st floor of the 28 floor building at 330 Ridout St just after 5 p.m. When fire crews entered the unit they were met with heavy smoke coming from the kitchen. Fire fighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze.

Because of the extent of the smoke, multiple crews were required to clear the smoke from the apartment and from multiple floors. Residents from six other floors waited in the building lobby until smoke was cleared and it was safe to return to their apartments.

Fire officials say no one was injured in the fire.

Residents living on the 21st floor were kept from their apartments until the investigation was complete.

The cause of the fire has not been released.

Fire officials have reported fire damage to the kitchen and smoke damage thoughout the apartment unit, estimated to be $20,000.
