Drug unit called to London home where chemicals discovered
Investigators, including those who specialize in narcotics, were expected to remain at a northwest London home overnight after someone reported finding unspecified chemicals inside.Police, firefighters and the HazMat team were called to 475 Lawson Rd. about 1 p.m. Monday after receiving a 911 call about the chemicals, which were reportedly found in “various containers.”Hours later, firefighters pulled up stakes and the investigation was taken over by police, including members of its guns and drugs unit.
Police have released few details about the case, including what kind of chemicals were found.
By late afternoon, police said the chemicals weren’t explosive. Earlier, however, investigators didn’t know what they were dealing with and urged neighbours to stay indoors.
“It’s unknown what they are and what their purpose is,” London police spokesman Const. Ken Steeves said as investigators waited for a search warrant.
Steeves was unable to say who discovered the chemicals and called for help.
An occupant of the home was transported to hospital for an unrelated matter, police said.
No one was in custody late Monday.
Police closed a short section of Lawson east of Wonderland Road to traffic for about three hours after the call was received.
