Northwest London Townhouse Blaze Snarls Traffic, Causes Over $100,000 In Damage

A fire at a townhouse complex in London’s northwest end has caused extensive damage and a traffic nightmare.

London fire crews tell AM980 they responded to a blaze at 1423 Wonderland Road Monday afternoon. Public Information Coordinator for the London Fire Department, Rick Jefferson says their initial assessments lead them to believe the blaze started in the basement of one of the townhouses and the flames spread throughout the unit.

He says there was no one in the home at the time the fire started so no injuries have been reported.

Jefferson says they don’t have a final total yet, but estimates the damage at over $100,000.

As of shortly before 4 p.m., Jefferson said crews had doused the flames, but are still asking motorists to avoid the area.

Jefferson says southbound traffic along Wonderland near Gainsborough is still blocked, but vehicles are now able to travel northbound in the area.

Citizen reporters have told AM980 traffic is heavily congested in the area because of the fire.

Meantime, a HazMat team was called to a nearby home on Lawson Road Monday afternoon after some chemicals were found inside.

Officials report there’s no risk to the public but Lawson Road is blocked to traffic.
