It was a dramatic scene in east London this afternoon as a man narrowly escaped a fire in his pick-up truck.

Fire officials say they were called to the intersection of Florence and Egerton Streets around 4 p.m. Friday.

A witness tells AM980 it was a frantic situation.

“All I seen is this Ford flying by, it was in smoke. Someone yelled get out of the car (truck). The car (truck) pulled over and by the time I seen anyone get out it was up in flames.”

Fire Captain Peter Hawkins was on the scene and tells AM980 the cause of the fire was an undercoating treatment.

“He had just gotten the vehicle undercoated and got to this intersection. The vehicle stalled, he wasn’t sure what was wrong. He managed to get through the intersection and flames started underneath the vehicle and then got right up into the cab.”

London Police shut down the intersection as fire crews doused the flames, but the roadway has since reopened. Thankfully, the man wasn’t injured.
