A fire outside an east London business sent a plume of smoke billowing into the air that was visible five kilometres away Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters received a report of a crane on fire at a construction company on Jetstream Rd., west of Veteran’s Memorial Parkway, shortly before 2 p.m.

Upon arriving, firefighters found a road paver, not a crane, engulfed in flames. Twenty firefighters worked to battle the blaze.

“They made a quick stop on it so it didn’t spread into the building,” said Platoon Chief Mike Black.

Damage is estimated at $30,000. Nobody was injured.

The cause of the fire is unknown, Black said.
