A criminal investigation is underway after a tense morning at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre.
London Police and fire fighters were called to the Exeter Road correctional facility around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday to reports of a fire.
Officers say when they arrived on scene, they found a small blaze in one of the facility’s pods and they were able to quickly extinguish it.
Police confirmed that two people, one employee of EMDC and one inmate, were transported to hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Early this afternoon, Staff Sgt. Tom Gaffney told reporters at the scene that the two were said to be in stable condition.
It’s unclear just how much physical damage the fire caused at the facility, but police say the jail remains under lockdown while authorities investigate.
