Two people have been reportedly taken to hospital after a fire at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre.

Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services Spokesman Brent Ross says a manager, and an inmate suffered non-life threatening injuries when the fire broke out, which police say was around 11:20 this morning in one of the pods.

Ross says the facility remains in lockdown until the current situation is resolved.

Police are now conducting an arson investigation along with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office.

The centre has been in lockdown recently after inmates broke a light fixture to use as a weapon.

Ministry officials say they are working still to address a number of issues at the facility including approximately 350 security cameras throughout, and have 24 hour nursing coverage.
