Two people were taken to hospital after a crash at a downtown London intersection sent one vehicle into a tailspin.

An SUV travelling westbound on York St. collided with a silver Mercedes travelling north on Colborne St. about 2:30 p.m., police said.

Witnesses say the force of the collision sent the Mercedes spinning as many as three times before it came to a rest on the sidewalk of the intersection’s northwest corner.

The car spun “like a pizza,” said one witness.

The witness, who didn’t want to give her name, ran up to the badly damaged vehicle to check on the occupants trapped inside.

She offered to pray with the couple, who she said told her they were coming from church, until emergency workers arrived.

Elizabeth Mitchell was walking down Colborne St. with friends when they heard a loud bang.

“As soon as I heard the hit I ran,” Mitchell said. “I went and said help is on the way – don’t move.”

Both the male driver and the female passenger, who firefighters cut from the wreckage, were taken to hospital with minor injuries, said Platoon Chief Jeff Adams.

The female driver of the SUV, which had heavy damage to its front end, and two small children were checked out by paramedics at the scene.

The intersection was closed for more than an hour while firefighters cleaned up the scene.
