Lab explosion injures one

An explosion in a lab at Robarts Research Institute Tuesday sent one person to hospital with minor burns.

A Western University research technician was in a lab in the basement of the institute when rubidium, a substance used in imaging that is flammable and corrosive, came in contact with water, triggering a reaction at 2:45 p.m.

The man was treated at the scene, then taken to nearby University Hospital, where he was treated for minor burns to his hands, said a university spokesperson.

Western’s hazardous materials team and firefighters secured the scene, evacuating the building and flushing the heating and cooling system as a precaution.

Damage was contained to the lab.
