A fire inside a south end apartment building has claimed the life of a disabled London man.
Fire crews were called to the scene on Belmont Drive, near Wharncliffe, around 8 p.m. on Sunday night, to find heavy smoke in a fourth-floor unit.
“He was found in the living room area. He was in a chair. All the specific fire damage was in that one location,” said Platoon Chief Jeff Adams.
“There was heavy smoke damage and heat damage in the apartment, but the heaviest fire damage was right in that location where the gentleman was found.”
Investigators say the man was bed-ridden and needed a wheel chair to get around.
“He was actually receiving care from some care takers, and they were actually on the scene. They were quite distraught when they found out he had passed away,” Adams told AM980.
The building houses many people who are disabled.
The man’s name and age have not yet been released.
“The cause of the fire is undetermined, the Fire Marshall’s office will be investigation along with London Police,” Adams said.
Firefighters had believed there were marijuana plants inside the apartment, as there were plants surrounded by foil, with heat lamps near by. However, after investigation, it turned out the plants were bell peppers.
