The London Fire Department and the City of London is encouraging participation in a TVOKids campaign to test smoke alarms. The campaign – which runs from October 22 until November 4 when the clocks fall back – urges children and their friends and families to test home smoke alarms.
This awareness initiative is aimed at having as many smoke alarms in as many Ontario homes as possible tested in the lead-up weeks to our switch to Daylight Savings time. The “Push the Button” campaign highlights the importance of testing smoke alarms (the battery needs to be replaced if the alarm doesn’t sound – or if the battery hasn’t been changed within the past year). Once the household alarms are tested, kids can go to TVOKids Push the Button counter and enter the number of alarms they have tested, then print off their own Push the Button certificate.
Whether the test of your home smoke alarms involves children or not, when you change your clocks, it’s also a good time to test your smoke alarms. Testing smoke alarms – and routinely replacing batteries or getting a new smoke alarm when necessary – is an essential safety protection measure for everyone. This is why it is now a legal requirement for homeowners to install and maintain smoke alarms on every storey of their home and outside sleeping areas.
