A Saturday night fire that damaged part of the parking garage and five vehicles at University Hospital was accidental, officials said Sunday. The owner of one of the damaged vehicles lives outside London and used a GPS to help him get to the hospital. When he attempted to remove the GPS, it caused sparks eventually started the fire. Firefighters were called to the London Health Sciences Centre campus at Western University Saturday evening at 7:30 for the blaze.
Three vehicles on the parking garage’s second level were fully consumed by flames before the fire was contained.Officials at the scene initially suspected arson and put the garage on lockdown, meaning vehicles parked there couldn’t be moved.
The Ontario Fire Marshal ruled out arson Sunday after a witness said the blaze stemmed from the malfunctioning car, according to a statement from the hospital.Vehicles were being released Sunday as engineers assessed each level of the garage for safety and gave the OK.No injuries were reported. All areas of the parking garage are expected to be open Monday morning.
