The London Fire Department says carelessness lead to a kitchen grease fire that destroyed an apartment on Trossacks Ave. Monday morning.

Firefighters were called to a five story building near the intersection of Adelaide St. and Fanshawe Park Rd. just before 10:00 a.m.

They say the smoke coming from the unit on the top floor of the building was so thick firefighters had to find the apartment by feeling their way through the hallway of the building. Several units were evacuated for a little over an hour as the flames were put out.

The kitchen of the apartment was gutted and there was heavy smoke and water damage to the rest of the apartment. Units below also have water damage. In total, the fire department says $100,000 in damage was caused.
