What started out as an innocent bike turned into anything but for a London man Sunday.

Around 1 p.m., the cyclist heard calls for help coming from the backyard of a home on Peglar Street near Hamilton Road.

When he made his way to the back of the house, he found a shed fully engulfed in flames.

He was able to help a man and woman evacuate and also rescued both of the couple’s dogs – while calling 911 from the homeowner’s cell phone.

While they waited for fire crews to arrive, he tried to douse the fire with a garden hose.

Thankfully, the blaze did not spread to the house, but the shed was completely destroyed and a nearby cinder block smoke house was damaged.

Platoon Chief Paul Carew says the fire was started by the couple’s barbeque.

"What we found is we believe the fire was started by coals and embers in a barbeque that was being used as a smoker, the fire was not entirely doused and it eventually set the shed and back on fire."

The fire is not considered to be suspicious; damage is estimated at $75,000.
