The London Fire Department’s hazardous materials unit was on the scene of a large barn blaze earlier today after concerns nearby propane tanks could explode due to the intense heat.
The fire is now under control and the fire crews were able to keep the tanks cool. There were also concerns about burning insulation.
There have been no reported injuries from the blaze.
Around 30 firefighters from London, Belmont and Yarmouth were called to battle the blaze, which broke out shortly after 2:30 p.m., near the intersection of Highbury Avenue and Glanworth Drive. Highbury, south of Glanworth, remains closed at this time.
Because of the size of the barn, two water towers were set up to give better coverage for firefighters combating the flames. While it came close, the fire did not spread to other buildings.
Investigators with the fire department will be on scene tonight to determine how the fire started and how much damage was caused, including a cost estimate.
