By the time an early evening blaze was extinguished, two homes were suffering “extensive damages” and one firefighter was sent to hospital with serious injuries.

At around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday night (Nov. 22), London Fire Department was called to a blaze at 518 Grovesnor St. The fire started in the rear of a single-family home in an attached garage resulting in heavy fire and smoke damage. According to deputy fire chief Brian George, despite an “aggressive attack” by the first responding unit, the fire spread quickly to a neighbouring home at 520 Grovesnor St.

Twenty-eight firefighters battled to get the blaze under control with one suffering serious injuries from a slip and fall, resulting in a visit to the hospital’s emergency room.

The residents of both homes were able to get out safely.

“The cause is undetermined at this point,” George said. The Ontario Fire Marshall has been called in to investigate. Damage is estimated at $500,000.
