Fire Insp. James Hind shows kids some of the tools used by firefighters in emergency situations. The tour of the Horton Street Fire Station on Friday (Oct. 14) was part of a breakfast held the fire hall.
Selected Grade 2 students were given more than just a tour of the Horton Street Fire Station Friday (Oct. 14).
Four students went to the firehouse to eat breakfast, made and served by firefighters.
As part of Fire Prevention Week, kids drew up comprehensive home escape plans making them eligible for a raffle offering the chance to win the free breakfast.
Essential elements required in the escape plan were location of fire alarms, all possible escape routes and an identified meeting place outside of the home, such as a tree or mailbox.
“While fire drills are routine at schools, businesses and institutions, they often are not held in the home,” said a London Fire Department media release. “Having an escape plan and regular fire drills at home can help a child to make decisions in an emergency that could help avoid serious injury.”
As a special treat, following the breakfast the winning students enjoyed a ride to school in a fire department vehicle.
