London’s Mayor Joe Fontana was at the Children’s Safety Village, on Friday (Oct. 7), teaching kids about fire prevention in his favourite place of his home- the kitchen.
Fontana spoke with J.P. Robarts’ Grade 1 class, showing the children how to prevent and control fires.
The mayor pretended to make his favourite meal, pasta, to give the kids examples of the dangers in a kitchen, especially around the stove.
The kitchen is where most home fires start and unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the Forest City, according to the London Fire Department.
Friday’s event is the kick off for Fire Prevention week, which runs from Oct. 9 to 15.
“We’re going to talk a little bit about why it’s important to protect our families from fire, what you can do to make sure to keep your family safe and what your parents and you need to do to learn,” Fontana said.
“That’s what Fire Prevention Week is all about. It’s about teaching you and your parents what to do, just in case we have something happen to our homes.”
