The owner of a building across the road from Fanshawe College has been fined a record amount for fire code violations in London.

The owner of a building at 1451 Oxford St. East was fined $18,500 this week for numerous infractions, including failure to maintain smoke alarms in apartments and failure to ensure fire doors into stairwells are unobstructed.

Students are the main tenants in the 12-unit, two-storey walkup building. The landlord did not attend the trial and was found guilty in absentia. The company that owns the building has 15 days from the time of the conviction to pay the penalty.

The court ruling is part of a trend in Ontario that shows landlords who don’t maintain their buildings in accordance with fire code regulations can expect strict enforcement and heavier fines.

Tenants with fire safety concerns can call the London Fire Department at 519-661-4565.
