A man is in hospital with severe burns after a propane explosion rocked an east London neighbourhood.

The aftermath of the Monday morning blast left a scene worthy of a war movie.

The garage of the house on peaceful Sunrise Cres. was simply gone, blown clean off the house by the force of the blast.

In the driveway were strewn the contents of the garage, now a soaking mess after an afternoon deluge.

London Fire Department District Chief Fritz Beck said the owner of the house, who was home when the blast happened, is lucky to be alive.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance, suffering severe burns.

Monday evening the house was taped off, but curious neighbours were making their way around the scene.

A man, who identified himself as an occupant of the house, was trying hard to keep people away.

“You have no right to write about this,” he said, when a reporter began to approach the house.

When the reporter tried to pass, the man threatened him.

Other neighbours responded to calls with suspicion, refusing to speak about the incident.

Surprisingly, there was little evidence of fire visible from the street.

The fire department said that was a result of the rapid explosion.

But the house did suffer major and extensive structural damage.

The garage door was blasted clear across the street.

The rear patio door and window of the house were blasted into the backyard.

The adjacent neighbour’s air conditioning unit was also crushed by the force of the blast.

The fire department described the incident as a propane explosion but are still investigating the cause of the blast.
